“In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.” - Albert Einstein
In the beginning of 2020, the fallout of the unprecedented COVID-19 has been way beyond a health crisis. With nearly each one impacted, it has heightened human suffering, undermined the economy, turned the lives of billions of people, and significantly affected the overall health, economic, environmental and social wellbeing of an entire nation. In short, the pandemic has posed twin threats to lives and livelihoods across the world and India has had significant setback in its growth and aspirations.
The declaration of pandemic induced nationwide lockdowns led the cinema complexes to be shut down which led to a staggering upheaval to the PVR Cinemas revenue. Due to revenue halt, mobility and gathering restrictions, PVR NEST’s existing initiatives at the time had to bear untimely closure. Our programmes were dedicated to provide childcare, education, rehabilitation and healthy well-being to the street children and children of migrant population.
Despite these setbacks, PVR NEST has worked tirelessly in its journey to provide safety and protection and making a positive social impact through uplifting the vulnerable. In the process of building resilience against the pandemic, PVR NEST found opportunity to reinvent itself to work on its foundation and prepare itself to face the new dynamic challenges, reskilled itself to understand the potential of new media leading to strengthening the digital plans for outreach and restrategized to build diverse partnerships to build back better.
The learnings during the COVID era led to us developing more innovative programmes with the assistance of similar-vision partners which focused on building health and urban sustainability. These included Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), education and learning, socio-economic support, capacity building, community empowerment, etc.
We rose above the pits of pandemic with flying colours and we truly believe that the path to which we are walking now will lead us to successfully bring our vision to fruition to build safe and equitable space for all. We are powerful and excited for the future ahead.
Paalan is a dynamic response initiative for COVID impacted children, in association with the Delhi Department of Women and Child Development and The Rani Fund. PVR NEST has provided immediate relief to over 216 children impacted by the COVID pandemic, by empowering them with necessary tools to ensure their holistic development.
During 2020-21, the Delhi Government's Women and Child Development (WCD) Department had identified 268 children who have been orphaned, and nearly 5,500 children who have lost either of their parents during the pandemic.
In association with the Delhi Government and The Rani Fund, ‘Paalan: A Dynamic Response Initiative’ was launched as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to support holistic care and development of COVID impacted children.
Strengthening the Government’s vaccination drive, a free vaccination camp was organized at PVR Juhu, Mumbai in association with Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital, as a special initiative to ensure the safety and protection of the film fraternity from COVID-19.
Overall, 1210 doses were administered to members of Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) such as artists, spot-boys, light men, make-up artists, etc.
To spread awareness among the people to get vaccinated, PVR NEST launched an awareness program across our social media platforms in which people shared their personal experiences of getting vaccinated and motivated others to do the same.
